Hurricane Helene hit Sarasota County September 26, 2024. Hurricane Milton made landfall at Siesta Key thirteen days later — October 9. Category 3. 115 mph winds. The first storm to make landfall in Sarasota County since 1944.
Most of Sarasota woke up on October 10 relieved. The barrier islands weren't. Siesta Key took a hard hit. Bird Key had wind damage. Harbor Drive in South Sarasota saw two inches of water in homes from both storms. The marina had boats lifted completely out of the water. Combined damage estimates for unincorporated Sarasota County from both storms exceeded $680 million.
Wind debris knocked doors off tracks across barrier island neighborhoods. Storm surge soaked hardware near the Gulf and Sarasota Bay. Some damage showed up immediately. Some is still showing up — hardware that survived both storms but corroded in the months after.
